Tips to Find a Doctor

If you think you may have fibromyalgia (or any other medical condition), the first thing you should do is find a fibro-friendly doctor. If you don’t already have one, here are a few suggestions:

  • Get a referral from a friend, family member, or coworker. Ask someone you know if they have a doctor they like and trust.

  • Ask the doctor about his or her experience with fibromyalgia. Many doctors have experience treating fibromyalgia. Of course, some have more experience than others. It’s okay to ask questions. Remember, your doctor is there to help you.

  • Find out if you need to see a specialist. Ask your doctor. Together, you can decide whether you should see a rheumatologist, pain specialist, or neurologist.

  • Ask your healthcare insurance provider for doctors in your plan. They will be able to provide you with a list. They can also help find a doctor in a location near you. And even tell you what steps you need to take before you see a specialist.

Once you have found a doctor, do your best to be prepared for visits.

Every part of the body receives electrical signals from the nerves in your brain. But sometimes, these nerves can get damaged. And damaged nerves sometimes send extra signals. Signals that healthy nerves would not send. These extra signals may cause pain.
